A mezzanine puts a second level over part of the shop, typically at the back wall where it will not crowd the main door. Underneath, you keep bench space or a finishing room; on top, you store lumber, parts bins or set up a quiet office with a window into the shop. The designer has to know what the deck will hold before sizing the beams and columns. Plan the stair or ship ladder, a railing along the open edge and the headroom you want on both levels.
