Workshop utilities to plan before the shell

Prepare an equipment and activity schedule so workshop power, air, lighting and ventilation can be coordinated early.

Make an equipment list before choosing the workshop shell. The machines, lights and work areas will determine where you need power, air, water and other services.

List activities and nameplates

For each tool or machine, record its make and model, power information from its documentation and expected location. Describe which equipment runs at the same time. Give the equipment information to your electrician to size the service.

Add the less obvious users: compressor, charger, office equipment, lighting and any planned climate control. Label future equipment as future so the contractor can separate installed work from provisions for later expansion.

Explain what the work produces

Wood dust, welding fumes, finishing products and routine vehicle work are different activities. Describe them accurately and ask appropriate specialists what ventilation, collection, storage or separation they require. An open vehicle door should not be treated as a complete design answer for every process.

Show where equipment maintenance will happen and where supplies enter. A practical services plan leaves access for maintenance as well as room for operation.

Make coordination visible

  • Put machines, doors and fixed benches on one drawing.
  • Identify service routes that cross the structure.
  • Ask who designs penetrations and equipment supports.
  • Separate utility connections from the building package.
  • Keep optional upgrades clearly marked.
